PRACTICAL PHILOSOPHY
An Introductory Course of ten weekly lectures
At the heart of ‘Practical Philosophy’ is the world in which we live and our understanding of it. How free do we feel, how creative and how content? Are there solutions to our problems that we haven’t seen because we haven’t thought differently? Is wisdom a possibility in our lives? How can our relationships work towards harmony rather than division?

Facilitated by experienced students, each session unfolds uniquely, based on conversation, observation and reflection inspired by some of the great philosophical traditions of the world. The aim is not to compare different philosophers, nor to learn about the history of philosophy. The aim is to discover how the wisdom of the ages can have a direct and immediately beneficial influence on our lives.
The source materials are wide-ranging, Eastern and Western, ancient and contemporary drawing from poetic literature, scientific enquiry and philosophical thought. At the same time, practical exercises are offered to aid the development of awareness and understanding. The key remains simplicity. It is not somebody else’s knowledge to be acquired but our own wisdom to be rediscovered.
For over fifty years in branches throughout the world, students of the course have gained a wider perspective on some of the fundamental questions of existence. The results have been easier, happier and more fulfilling lives.
Among the subjects explored in the Introductory Course are:
• Using Reason to develop clarity of thought.
• Finding Beauty in the world around us.
• Dissolving stress.
• Freedom from fear & anger.
• The power of attention and how to refine its use.
• The unchanging in a changing world.
• The central question of philosophy: Who am I?
