Frequently Asked Questions

What does the course offer?
The course is designed as an introduction to practical philosophy – ‘practical’ in the sense that it is relevant to our everyday lives. The intention is to expand the way we think and look at the world and ourselves, as a result enjoying greater happiness and freedom. It is based most fundamentally on the philosophy of Advaita – literally ‘not two’. This carries the sense of an underlying unity in all things, recognised as a key to many of the great teachings of East and West. It is suited to all, irrespective of race, religion or creed.

When does the next course start?
Different Branches around the country start on different days.  There will be no Introductory Course in the Wessex Branch during the summer.  The Wessex Branch Introductory Courses will begin in October.  In London, the next course runs Monday 27th April to Saturday 2nd May. Each week's session in London is repeated every day from Monday to Saturday, so if you wish you can vary the day of your attendance each week. Sessions begin at 7 pm, from Monday to Friday, and at 10 am on Saturday mornings. They last about two and a half hours, including a break for refreshments.  Sessions in the Wessex Branch begin at 7.15pm and finish at around 9.30pm.

Where is it?
Check the venues page for information about courses in the Wessex Branch.  The School of Economic Science in London is at 11 Mandeville Place, less than five minutes’ walk from Bond Street tube station.

How many weeks does it last?
Ten.

What does the course actually cover?
The course has plenty in it for anyone interested in the world around us. Concepts considered include elements from some of the great philosophic teachings and religions of the world such as Socrates, Plato, Emerson, Confucius, Shakespeare, the Bible, the Upanishads, Buddha and Shantananda Saraswati, a modern exponent of the philosophy of unity. A simple exercise in perception is introduced in the first week.

What is the format of the evenings?
A tutor presents material, and facilitates discussion based on what arises. Students are encouraged neither to accept nor reject the ideas put forward, but to test their effect in practice for themselves, in the light of their own experience.

What do I need to bring with me?
Just an open and enquiring mind. At the end of each evening a handout with key points and any quotations used is provided.

Do I need any previous qualifications?
No. The courses are suitable for everyone, regardless of education, occupation, race, political or religious belief. The course is not religious, but it does address the spirit in Mankind.

Will I get a certificate or qualification?
These are not academic courses. They are practical rather than theoretical. There are no exams.

Who runs the course?
The School of Economic Science. The School is an educational charity regulated by the Charity Commission. It was founded in 1937 teaching economics. In the 1950s, philosophy became the main study and has remained so ever since. The School has its headquarters in London and many branches in England and Scotland. Affiliated schools have been established in other countries.

How much does it cost?
The fee varies in different venues depending on accommodation costs.  In Wessex the Fee is £66.00 with a concessionary rate for full-time students of £44.00.  In London the cost is £75 for the 10 sessions with a concessionary price of £50, and £20 for full-time students. If claiming a concession please provide evidence of status.

Are there any trial sessions?
No, you need to enrol for the full ten week course. However, you can cancel your enrolment, for any reason, up to the end of the second week of term (irrespective of whether you have attended a class). The enrolment fee will be refunded to you, less a £5 administration charge. If for personal reasons you are unable to complete the course after a few sessions, you are entitled to a free retake of the whole course in the following term.

How can I enrol?
You can pay by cash or cheque before the beginning of the first session.  For the London course, you can also  enrol online or by calling 020 7034 4000, or by visiting 11 Mandeville Place in person on weekdays between 9.30 am and 6.30 pm.

What about further studies?
On completing the course, some then want to go further; others find that this introduction to the subject sufficiently satisfies their interest. For those who wish to continue, the School offers regular Spring, Summer and Autumn courses and, after a while, the practice of meditation. All are most welcome. The hope is that everyone, however long or short their stay, will find something of real value to them.
